- a distant relative of James and John - who came to St Helens from Spon Lane
to work for Greenall & Pilkingtons in 1835, later recalled that the first
sheet glassmakers to be employed there were some Belgians who had previously
worked at Spon Lane and then in Sunderland. He went on to describe how they
came to St Helens and how others learned the tricks of their trade:
One day a Belgian whom I had known at Chances, named Legget - nay, I don't know how the name is spelt - called on me and asked what sort of masters I had. I told him and he came to terms, I suppose, with them for he started blowing sheets soon after. Then others came along and they worked away amongst us. Certainly they tried to keep their operations as secret as they could, but they each had to have a gatherer and the gatherers saw how the thing was done. It was all a question of knack... Gradually our men picked it up and they and the Belgians used to work side by side at the blowing ... One or two of them were big, powerful chaps; and they were rather objects of curiosity when they walked the streets. They only spoke English indifferently well; most of their leisure time they spent playing bagatelle at the Peel Arms in Westfield Street ... They gradually got scattered; one went to Liverpool where he started business in the public line; two of them died and are buried in Windleshaw .(St Helens Lantern 3 Jan 1889) Abraham wrote his Will on the5th April 1885.
